Calcium Supplementation

Calcium supplementation has been the rave in the past couple of years and for good cause. Osteoporosis is rampant amongst older women. Most people do know that taking taking vitamin D with your calcium is necessary for proper calcium absorption. Besides that, you do want to watch how much your consuming, especially if your a man. Higher calcium intakes have been associated with a higher risk of prostate cancer. If you’re African American, you should definitely be aware of your calcium intake as the rate of prostate cancer is higher anyways. The recommended amount of calcium is 1000mg/ a day. If you’re a man and getting thsi through your diet, you don’t need supplementation. If you’re not, you’d be okay taking supplementation. Besides that, older women in addition to calcium/vitamin d suppelementation need to be doing weight training. Heck, weight training will do more for your osteoporisis (or the prevention of) than calcium suppelementation will do because your bones will actually be strong enough to use the extra calcium.

Learning and Unlearning

I would say that the more I’ve been in the health field, the more I’ve begun to unlearn. I’ve realized there are many ways to get the job done and not just one way. Some methods that apear completely opposite can both get the job done. However, there are somethings that have not changed. Consistency is the king for producing results. If you want to truly reach a goal, consistency is necessary. Also, being open-minded to a different approach is a very good thing. One thing that I am beginning to open myself up to is different ways of being healthy. Although I believe that one should be sufficiently strong to lift an engine block if they needed to, I do believe that cardiovascular power, flexibility, injury prevention, and basic movement can be drastically improved upon if people were open to it. Besides that, everybody is pretty much aware of how they could improve their nutrition.

Vacation Syndrome

After I returned from my “vacation” from the Diabetes Prevention conference, I was very surprised at my eating habits. I didn’t care about what I ate. Although I brought some protein powders and nuts and ate mostly good, I did have a few “anything goes” meals in Denver. When I came back, I realized I was in the same mindset. I’ve also observed this in my clients. It seems that it takes at least a couple of days to get back into the swing of things. Now that I am, I have a few recommendations to help counter “vacation syndrome.” First, committ yourself back to your original plan and stick to it. Secondly, don’t eat too bad while on vacation. I had a client who ate like crap and still is suffering from the effects of this two weeks later.

Diabetes Prevention Conference

I just returned from the Special Diabetes Prevention for Indians (SDPI) conference. It was inspiring to meet a group of people who are committed to preventing a preventable disease. There were all kinds of practioners -doctors, nurses, dieticians, physical trainers, and program coordinators. We actually received funding more three years which was not really expected since the original grant kept being extended year-by-year (and this year was supposed to be the last year.) The reason why we received additional funding is because our program works. We focus on creating better dietary and lifestyle changes to help individuals become more active and eat better. We don’t use medications! We treat people the way they are supposed to be treated. I am honored to be a a part of the top-rated program in the nation (here in Minneapolis) and serving the Native community.
